To make a day of it

Château de Saint-Maur stands in Saint-Maur-des-Fossés (Val-de-Marne), in the Île-de-France region of France. No visits are on record for this building.

The château de Saint-Maur no longer stands: begun in 1541 by Philibert Delorme for Cardinal Jean du Bellay, then continued under Catherine de Médicis with the involvement of Jacques Androuet du Cerceau, it ranked among the major Renaissance buildings before being sold as national property during the Revolution and pulled down in 1796. Later held by the princes of Condé, it reached its finest period in the eighteenth century, with gardens laid out by Le Nôtre. At the site, in Saint-Maur-des-Fossés, only the stables known as the Petit-Bourbon remain as evidence of this vanished estate.

What to know

  • The château was entirely demolished in 1796, so there is no building left to visit.
  • Only the Petit-Bourbon stables survive as a visible trace of the original estate.
  • The former park, sold off and later ceded in the nineteenth century, disappeared under urban development and railway land.
  • A visit therefore amounts to a historical site with no standing monument, located in Saint-Maur-des-Fossés in the Val-de-Marne.
