In Puyrolland, in the Charente-Maritime department, the Château de Romefort survives only as a ruined site overtaken by vegetation. Built in the 15th century on a castle mound, it once took the form of a hexagonal enclosure surrounded by moats, before being heavily altered in the 17th century. A mound, a few sections of wall and the remains of a 19th-century farm building dated 1887 can still be seen, but the manor house, its tower and vaulted rooms are gone.
