To make a day of it

Château de Villeneuve-la-Comtesse stands in Villeneuve-la-Comtesse (Charente-Maritime), in the Nouvelle-Aquitaine region of France. The building is registered as a historic monument (dating recorded in the Mérimée database: 14th century). Its opening hours and prices have not been verified at the source yet.

South of the village of Villeneuve-la-Comtesse, in Charente-Maritime, this 14th century fortified castle still shows its rectangular enclosure flanked by two towers and a gate-keep that once served as the only entrance. Traces of its defensive past remain visible: machicolations, arrow slits, a bretèche and a drawbridge system rebuilt in the 20th century. The site sits on a platform surrounded by partly filled-in moats, an estate that has been tied to farming since the 19th century.
