In Brécey, in the Manche department, the Château de la Sémondière stands in a quiet valley away from main roads. Built in 1590 under Henri IV, this seigneurial house of schist and granite still shows defensive features inherited from the Wars of Religion: a moat, thick walls, a loophole and a lookout opening. Visitors come to see Louis XIII style architecture largely preserved through later alterations made under the First Empire by Colonel Jean-François du Buat.
