At La Bruffière, in the Vendée region, the Château de l'Echasserie still stands with four of its original five towers, encircled entirely by water filled moats. Built as a defensive outpost at the meeting point of Poitou, Anjou and Brittany, it survived the Vendée wars before being partly rebuilt in the nineteenth century. Notable features include the so called chandelier tower, known for its unusual roof, and the watch tower, the only one to survive the 1793 fire. The estate, still privately owned after passing through several families, is best appreciated from the surrounding grounds and the view of its towers reflected in the moat.
