To make a day of it

Château de Fressac stands in Fressac (Gard), in the Occitanie region of France. The building is registered as a historic monument (dating recorded in the Mérimée database: 13th century). No visits are on record for this building.

Perched on Castellas hill at an altitude of 340 metres, the ruins of Fressac castle overlook the surrounding countryside and can be seen from Monoblet, Anduze and Saint-Hippolyte-du-Fort. Built in the 12th and 13th centuries by the Bermond family of Anduze and Sauve, the structure retains a three-storey keep, an enclosure wall still standing to its full height, and a wall-walk lined with arrow slits. Lacking any real living quarters, it stands as an example of what historians call a refuge castle, designed for defence rather than residence.

What to know

  • Public access to the site has been prohibited since a municipal order issued in February 2019, due to rockfall risk and the collapse of a vault.
  • The castle was traditionally reached on foot from the hamlet of Les Montèzes, in the neighbouring commune of Monoblet, via an old pathway.
  • The remains are open-air ruins, with no roof or interior fittings apart from two vaulted rooms.
  • The site has belonged to the commune of Fressac since 1992.
  • Visiting is currently limited to viewing from outside or at a distance, as direct access to the ruins is not permitted.
