Fondé sur un site stratégique naturel remarquable, le château a été construit au début du 13e siècle. Parmi les ruines du site castral, l'élément le mieux conservé est la tour-donjon de plan carré, qui posséde encore trois murs de 2, 20 mètres d'épaisseur sur trois niveaux ; elle est construite en moellons bruts de moyen appareil.
