What the French Ministry of Culture records

La position stratégique du piton explique son occupation dès l'époque romaine. Différentes campagnes de constructions aux 14e, 17e et 18e siècles. Le château connut d'importants combats au cours des guerres de Religion, et fut pris en 1586 par le sire d'Anelon, protestant. L'enceinte n'est plus très visible. La partie du 14e siècle comprend une masse rectangulaire ornée d'une fenêtre en plein cintre au sud, et une fenêtre trilobée au nord. Elle contient la chapelle, pièce ogivale avec des sculptures à la retombée des nervures et une porte gothique. A l'angle, une tour qui devait être le premier donjon. C'est là que se trouvent l'escalier à vis et le cachot. La construction du 16e siècle est contigüe à la précédente, au nord. Pourvue de mâchicoulis et de rainures destinées au jeu des madriers. La troisième partie date de 1712, elle est en gros moëllons et montre, au sud, quelques ouvertures Renaissance. Elle renferme de grandes salles aux voûtes cintrées.
