To make a day of it

Château de Charleval stands in Charleval (Eure), in the Normandie region of France. No visits are on record for this building.

Charleval preserves the traces of a château that never became what it was meant to be. Commissioned by Charles IX in the 16th century to surpass the château de Chambord in scale, construction halted abruptly when the king died in 1574, with only the first floor of a single wing ever completed. What remains today are moats, outbuildings, a chapel and a pavilion now converted into a private home, scattered reminders of an unfinished royal ambition.
