To make a day of it

Château de Charbonnières stands in Val-d'Arc (Savoie), in the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region of France. No visits are on record for this building.

Perched on a glacial rock about 80 metres above Aiguebelle, the ruins of Charbonnières castle mark the site of an 11th-century stronghold, once the principal residence of the early counts of Savoy before they moved their seat to Montmélian and later Chambéry. The fortress guarded the road to Italy over the Mont-Cenis pass and was fought over repeatedly during the 16th and 17th centuries, falling into ruin in the 18th century. Visitors come mainly for the remains themselves and for the view over the Arc valley, rather than for a restored building.
