To make a day of it

Château d'Entrecasteaux stands in Entrecasteaux (Var), in the Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur region of France. The building is registered as a historic monument. The building is privately owned and no visits are on record.

Overlooking the village of Entrecasteaux in the Var department, this château stands on the foundations of an 11th century fortress reshaped during the 15th, 16th and 18th centuries. It witnessed striking lives, among them Admiral Bruny d'Entrecasteaux, born within its walls before vanishing while searching for La Pérouse in the South Pacific. After decades of neglect, a British painter undertook its restoration in the 1970s, giving it a museum purpose that has continued since. Visitors can now see three salons with their fireplaces, a grand interior staircase and gardens laid out in the manner of Le Nôtre.
