On attribue au premier seigneur de Sars, qualifié de Sire d'Audignies, la construction à la fin du 14e siècle de la grosse tour carrée située à un angle et désignée comme donjon. Quand Guillaume du Mont est devenu propriétaire dans le premier quart du 17e siècle, il a transformé la forteresse en lieu de plaisance. C'est à la famille Van Damme que l'on doit le décor intérieur du 18e siècle.
