Set on a basalt outcrop at 1,100 metres above sea level, Apchon castle overlooks the village of the same name and the surrounding valleys of the Cantal region. These medieval ruins, once home to one of Upper Auvergne's most prominent noble families, still show an enclosure wall flanked by five round towers, two engaged towers and remains of residential buildings. Uninhabited since the 18th century, the site bears witness to its defensive role during the Hundred Years' War, on the shifting border between English and French-held land.
