Ancien château de Cabannes stands in Cabannes (Bouches-du-Rhône), in the Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur region of France. The building is registered as a historic monument (dating recorded in the Mérimée database: 13th century, 14th century, 15th century). No visits are on record for this building.
Standing at the heart of Cabannes since at least the 12th century, this stone castle has undergone several transformations that make it a testament to Provençal history. Documented from the Middle Ages onward, it acquired its current defensive form in the mid-15th century when Antoine de Pontevès, the new lord, considerably reinforced it following a local uprising. The building retains its original massed plan, with a crenelated main block and a square tower that once flanked its western corner, whilst bearing witness to the refinements successive owners brought to it over the following centuries.
What to know
- The castle has been listed as a historical monument since 2022 and remains a private property.
- A square tower that once dominated the western corner of the building was removed in 1894, which changed the castle's appearance during the 19th century.
- The site housed several noble families, including the Pontevès in the 15th century, the Rollands from Burgundy in the 16th century, and in the 18th century the Vento family, who had a chapel built there.
- Pillaged during the French Revolution, the castle was subdivided into several properties before being gradually restored.
