In Saint-Jean-de-Chevelu, in the Savoie region, the Prélian fortified house stands around its 14th century tower, known as the Chevelu tower, later extended with a 17th century residential wing and a stepped-gable barn. The building still bears the marks of a fire in late January 1979, which destroyed one of its two wings before a partial restoration. Its most notable feature is the painted faux-masonry decoration covering the tower, both outside and inside window bays, stairways and corridors, making it hard to distinguish the different floors.
