To make a day of it

Uhlenburg stands in Essel (Heidekreis), in Lower Saxony, Germany. No visits are on record for this building.

Uhlenburg marks the site of a 14th-century lowland castle, now vanished, near Essel in the Heidekreis district of Lower Saxony. Built within a loop of the River Aller by the lords of Hademstorf, it was violently destroyed in 1393 or 1394 by order of the dukes of Brunswick-Lüneburg. What remains today is a mound roughly 30 metres square, surrounded by a moat and traces of an outer bailey, set in the damp pastureland of the Aller valley. Excavations since the early 20th century have turned up pottery, roof tiles, charcoal and a seal bearing the Hademstorf coat of arms, though the site has not been dug recently and is being kept as a reserve for future research.
