To make a day of it

Spökelburg stands in Hamburg-Mitte (Hamburg), in Hamburg, Germany. No visits are on record for this building.

The Spökelburg, also known as Schiffbekerburg or Schleemerburg, was an early medieval hilltop fortification, now vanished, on the Spökelberg in Hamburg's Billstedt district. What remains is a decayed earthen rampart forming a rounded rectangle, once surrounded by a ditch, enclosing an interior area of roughly 1,250 square metres. Three archaeological excavations in 1880, 1935 and 1953 produced almost no findings. Visiting the site means walking an earthwork rather than seeing a standing building, since nothing above ground has survived.

What to know

  • Only an earthen rampart and parts of a ditch survive, there is no standing ruin to see on site.
  • The site sits on the Spökelberg in Hamburg-Billstedt, within a residential area.
  • A house built in 1865 now stands on the mound, close to the remains.
  • There are no opening hours, fees or visitor facilities, a visit is simply a walk across the open terrain.
  • Access is easy and requires no physical effort, as the site lies within the built-up district of Billstedt.
