Schloss Neuenburg stands in Zetel, in Lower Saxony, on the site of a fortress founded in 1462 by Count Gerd of Oldenburg to hold back the East Frisians. Destroyed shortly after it was built, it was restored and then turned between 1570 and 1582 into a fortified residence used as a summer retreat and hunting lodge.
