To make a day of it

Ruine Scharfeneck stands in Oberscheinfeld (Landkreis Neustadt an der Aisch-Bad Windsheim), in Bavaria, Germany. The building is a listed Baudenkmal. Its opening hours and prices have not been verified at the source yet.

The Burgruine Scharfeneck stands on a rocky spur of the Steigerwald forest, northeast of Oberscheinfeld in Bavaria. Of the original stronghold founded around 1100 by the lords of Scheinfeld, only the sixteen-metre keep remains, built from rusticated stone between 1240 and 1250. Converted into a lookout tower at the end of the 19th century, it leads visitors up to a platform overlooking the surrounding valley.

What to know

  • Only the keep, roughly sixteen metres tall, survived the demolition of the fortress in the 16th century.
  • Visitors climb a 74-step wooden staircase to reach the viewing platform.
  • The tower is maintained by the Steigerwaldklub of Oberscheinfeld and is open only during the summer half of the year, on Sundays and public holidays.
  • The site is listed as a Baudenkmal in Bavaria.
  • The remains stand on an isolated spur cut off by two ditches, surrounded by forest, so some walking is required to reach it.
