Hünenburg bei Bielefeld stands in Bielefeld (Bielefeld), in North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany. The building is a listed Baudenkmal. Recorded dating: 4th century. Its opening hours and prices have not been verified at the source yet.
The Hünenburg occupies a hilltop in the Teutoburg Forest west of Bielefeld's city centre, in North Rhine-Westphalia. What remains is an earthwork refuge fortification dating from the 4th century, its roughly 2.8 hectare enclosure marked by a surrounding earthen rampart. Excavations uncovered a short stretch of dry stone wall that once fronted a timber construction, along with signs that the enclosed area may have served as a gathering or ritual site. A former telecommunications tower on the summit, now repurposed as a lookout, offers wide views across the forested ridge.
What to know
- The site is reached on foot, via the Hünenburgstraße or along the ridge path (Kammweg) through the Teutoburg Forest.
- Little of the ancient fortification remains visible above ground, with the shape of the terrain and the earthen rampart being the main traces.
- The lookout tower, housed in the former telecommunications building, only opens on weekends and in good weather.
- From the platform, about 30 metres up, there are wide views across the Teutoburg Forest.
- The site is listed as a Kulturdenkmal in Germany.
