To make a day of it
Hennebergische Reichsburg Schweinfurt stands in Schweinfurt (Schweinfurt), in Bavaria, Germany. No visits are on record for this building.
The Hennebergische Reichsburg of Schweinfurt no longer stands as a building: it was an imperial castle erected by 1310 at the latest, built into the town's fortifications, and torn down from 1427 onward. Its former site lies in the historic Zürch quarter, where the street names Burggasse and Rittergasse still mark its location. The only surviving structure is the castle's former Gothic chapel, now incorporated as the choir of the Salvatorkirche; otherwise only a few fragments of wall remain in this quarter, which still has the feel of a fortified district.
What to know
- This is not a castle that can be visited in the usual sense: the fortress was demolished from 1427 onward and no complete building remains.
- The only preserved element, the former Gothic chapel, can be seen today as part of the Salvatorkirche, in the Zürch quarter.
- Exploring the site mainly means walking through the old fortified quarter's streets, Burggasse and Rittergasse, and spotting the remaining wall fragments.
- The Zürch quarter underwent extensive restoration in the 1980s, making it pleasant to walk through today.
