To make a day of it

Haus Dorneburg stands in Herne (Herne), in North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany. No visits are on record for this building.

Haus Dorneburg was a moated manor house built on the banks of the Dorneburger Bach, in what is now the Eickel district of Herne. First recorded in 1243 through a knightly family bearing its name, it later passed by marriage and inheritance to the von Loë and then the von Strünkede families, before changing hands repeatedly during the 18th and 19th centuries. Rebuilt in a classical style after a fire in 1844, the house was destroyed by Allied air raids in 1942 and 1943 and fully demolished between 1951 and 1955. Nothing of the historic structure survives today; the grounds now hold a residential housing estate.

What to know

  • The house was completely destroyed during the Second World War and demolished in the 1950s, so there is no building left to visit.
  • The original site lies in the Eickel district of Herne, now covered by a residential housing estate.
  • Only the street name 'Auf der Dorneburg' still marks the former location.
  • There are no opening hours, fees or visitor facilities since the site no longer exists as a structure.
