Burgstall Sandau stands in Landsberg am Lech (Landsberg am Lech), in Bavaria, Germany. Its opening hours and prices have not been verified at the source yet.
The Burgstall Sandau is the earthen remains of a high medieval motte castle, perched above the Lech valley northeast of the former Benedictine monastery church in Sandau, a district of Landsberg am Lech. No walls or towers survive today, only a roughly square mound some 40 metres across, bordered by a ditch and a steep erosion gully on its northern side. The site is believed to have been the seat of a family of ministeriales serving the Welf dukes, first documented in the 12th century.
What to know
- This is not a standing castle but an open-air archaeological earthwork reduced to a mound and ditches.
- There is no building, ticket office or opening schedule on site, access is free and on foot.
- The terrain is uneven, with a steep erosion gully to the north, so sturdy footwear is advisable.
- The immediate area south of the site is partly built up and fenced off by modern private property.
- A visit mainly involves reading the shape of the land, as there is no reconstruction or visible display.
