To make a day of it

Burg Wartenberg stands in Wartenberg (Landkreis Erding), in Bavaria, Germany. The building is a listed Baudenkmal. Its opening hours and prices have not been verified at the source yet.

Burg Wartenberg stood on the Nikolaiberg, a hilltop east of the town of Wartenberg in Bavaria. Built in the early 12th century by Otto V of Scheyern-Wittelsbach, it briefly became a seat of Wittelsbach power before being abandoned and largely torn down by the 15th century. No masonry remains above ground today; only shaped earthworks and the St. Nicholas chapel mark the former castle site.

What to know

  • This is not a castle building to tour but an open-air site, a Burgstall, with no main structure left standing.
  • The St. Nicholas chapel, rebuilt around 1250 and reworked in 1619, stands at the northwest corner of the former site and bears a Romanesque tympanum showing a dragon and a lion.
  • A limestone memorial stele, put up in 1855, marks where the castle once stood.
  • Reaching the site involves a walk uphill on the Nikolaiberg, east of the town of Wartenberg.
  • The site is listed as a Kulturdenkmal in Germany.

Who built Burg Wartenberg?
Otto V of Scheyern-Wittelsbach had it built between 1116 and 1120.
Why did Burg Wartenberg disappear?
