Where
Moisburg

Burg Moisburg stands in Moisburg (Landkreis Harburg), in Lower Saxony, Germany. No visits are on record for this building.

Moisburg Castle no longer stands: what remains of this late medieval stronghold in Moisburg, Lower Saxony, lies buried beneath today's Amtshaus. Built between 1310 and 1322 for the Duchy of Brunswick-Lüneburg, it guarded the northwestern edge of the Lüneburg territory before being torn down from 1694 onward. The central wing of the building erected in 1711 on the site of the outer bailey has survived and now belongs to the municipality. There is no fortress to visit here, only a place where the fortified past has faded into the village's administrative life.

What to know

  • No fortified structure is visible today: only the medieval foundations remain buried beneath the current Amtshaus.
  • The surviving building now houses the mayor's office, meeting rooms and private flats, and is not set up as a visitor attraction.
  • A 2010 rescue excavation uncovered a medieval moat 11.5 metres wide, evidence of the former fortification.
  • There are no opening hours, admission fees or visitor facilities, as the site is not organised for tourism.
