Bundesfestung Ulm stands in Ulm (Ulm), in Baden-Württemberg, Germany. The building is a listed Baudenkmal. Its opening hours and prices have not been verified at the source yet.

Ulm Fortress is a large 19th-century fortification system built on both banks of the Danube, spanning the cities of Ulm and Neu-Ulm. It consists of a main rampart line together with numerous outlying forts and bastions, several of which still stand within or around the modern town. Visits today focus on individual surviving sections, such as the Wilhelmsburg, the Oberer Kuhberg fort and the Blaubeurer Tor, each reflecting a different phase of this military architecture.

What to know

  • The fortress is spread across several separate sites in Ulm and Neu-Ulm, best visited one at a time.
  • The Oberer Kuhberg fort houses a fortress museum maintained by a volunteer association.
  • Some structures, such as the Blaubeurer Tor, are still under restoration and can only be viewed from outside.
  • Many outer forts and bastions can be explored on foot or by bike along urban and suburban routes.
  • There is no single set of opening hours or admission fees for the whole fortress, as each site has its own conditions.
