To make a day of it

Bodendenkmal in Nabburg, #D-3-6539-0152 stands in Nabburg (Landkreis Schwandorf), in Bavaria, Germany. Its opening hours and prices have not been verified at the source yet.

Burg Nabburg refers to the medieval stronghold that once stood at the north-western corner of the town walls of Nabburg, in the Upper Palatinate. Archaeological evidence dates its construction to between 894 and 924, and the settlement is first mentioned in a document issued by King Henry the Fowler in 929. No plan or drawing of the original fortress has survived, so its appearance remains unknown. What remains today lies underground, beneath the later Pflegschloss and the Protestant church of St. Lawrence that were built on the site.

What to know

  • No visible structure of the medieval stronghold survives, only buried archaeological remains.
  • The site lies beneath the present Schloss Nabburg and St. Lawrence's church, in the town's historic centre.
  • There is no organised tour or dedicated access to these underground remains.
  • The building visible today, the 16th-century Schloss remodelled around 1750, is covered separately.
