Bodendenkmal in Marktl, #D-1-7742-0008 stands in Marktl (Landkreis Altötting), in Bavaria, Germany. Its opening hours and prices have not been verified at the source yet.

The Burgstall bei Altwies marks the site of a former hilltop fortification, now vanished, standing at 451 metres above sea level just south of the hamlet of Altwies, part of the municipality of Marktl. The location saw several successive phases of use: a fortified settlement with workshop areas from the late La Tène period, a Roman-era settlement, and later two medieval Burgställe, one of them known as Burg Leonberg. This latter stronghold, first recorded in 1200, served as the ancestral seat of the Counts of Leonberg. It is not a castle open for conventional visits but an archaeological ground site without any standing structure.

What to know

  • No standing buildings remain, the site consists only of ground traces and earthworks.
  • There are no opening hours or fees, as the location lies outdoors in open countryside.
  • Access is via a path from the hamlet of Altwies, with no particular tourist facilities.
  • Any artefacts found during excavations are not displayed on site.
  • Sturdy footwear is advisable, since the terrain is elevated and can be uneven.
