To make a day of it

Bodendenkmal in Gangkofen, #D-2-7541-0100 stands in Gangkofen (Landkreis Rottal-Inn), in Bavaria, Germany. Its opening hours and prices have not been verified at the source yet.

The Sitz Königsberg marks the former location of a moated castle, or Wasserburg, that once stood just south of the Bina river in Gangkofen. Nothing of the structure remains above ground today; what survives are buried medieval and early modern remains identified beneath the site. Old Bavarian land survey maps still show the roughly square island and its surrounding moat, up to 18 to 35 metres wide, though the moat itself has long since disappeared. A road now runs across the former castle site, which is entirely built over. In 1803 it was recorded as one of twenty-one seats belonging to the Eggenfelden court district.

What to know

  • There is no visible structure on site; what remains are buried archaeological traces.
  • A modern road now runs across the former castle location.
  • The outline of the surrounding moat is no longer recognisable on the ground.
  • No opening hours, admission fees or organised access exist, since this is not a monument open for visits.
  • The site lies in Gangkofen, in the Landkreis Rottal-Inn, Bavaria.
