To make a day of it

Château Vauclair stands in La Rochelle (Charente-Maritime), in the Nouvelle-Aquitaine region of France. No visits are on record for this building.

Little remains to be seen of Vauclair castle, built in the late twelfth century by Henry II of England to guard La Rochelle's early harbour. Dismantled after the 1372 siege and finally collapsed in the sixteenth century, its foundations resurfaced in 1995 during the digging of an underground car park beneath today's place de Verdun. This is a place for history rather than architecture, a way to locate a vanished stronghold rather than admire standing walls.
