To make a day of it

Château Nolibos stands in Mont-de-Marsan (Landes), in the Nouvelle-Aquitaine region of France. No visits are on record for this building.

The château de Nolibos once guarded the northeastern corner of Mont-de-Marsan until the eighteenth century, when it was razed completely. Built in the fourteenth century, likely on the orders of Gaston Fébus, it reinforced the town's defences alongside the older Château Vieux. Nothing of it remains today: its former site now corresponds to the Villa des Roses on rue Victor-Hugo. A visit here means tracing the footprint of a vanished fortress rather than viewing a standing building.

What to know

  • No visible remains of the castle survive, it was demolished between the seventeenth century and 1746.
  • The former site now corresponds to the Villa des Roses, at 18 rue Victor-Hugo in Mont-de-Marsan.
  • This is a historical rather than physical visit, as there is no standing structure to walk through.
  • The exact origin of the name Nolibos remains uncertain, despite several theories proposed by local historians.
