To make a day of it

Château des Gadelles stands in Sainte-Adresse (Seine-Maritime), in the Normandie region of France. The building is registered as a historic monument. Its opening hours and prices have not been verified at the source yet.

The château des Gadelles is an entrance pavilion built between 1886 and 1894 in Le Havre, designed by Parisian architect Pierre-Édouard Dumont in collaboration with Henri Toutain. This singular building, originally intended as a lodge-library, draws on Renaissance architecture through its sculpted decoration and facade composition, itself referencing the Arco de Santa Maria in Burgos. The metal roof structures came from Eiffel's workshops. The main château building was never completed.

What to know

  • The pavilion extends across both Le Havre and Sainte-Adresse municipalities and has been listed as a historical monument since 1997.
  • The building's structure is distinguished by its Corinthian-capped columns, gargoyles, and wrought iron ornaments typical of the Renaissance.
  • The building underwent restoration in 1996, which covered the lodge-library, boundary walls, gates, and staircases.
