Tucked into a hollow at the foot of the Berthiand mountain in the Haut-Bugey region, the château de Volognat still rests on medieval foundations beneath a classical façade added in the late 18th century by the Douglas family. Kept away from the main roads for centuries, the building has passed down through generations to the current descendants of Hubert Vaffier, an industrialist who bought it in 1880. The grounds, crossed by a stream and dotted with rocky outcrops, surround the building.
