Standing on a steep hilltop in the commune of Cognin, in Savoy, the Château de Montcharvin once guarded the old route linking Chambéry to Les Échelles. This fortified house dates from the 13th century and was altered over the two following centuries; it retains a squared tower with a truncated roofline, two round towers from its enclosing wall, and two gateways of different periods. Inside the main building, a hall with moulded beams and a large 14th-century fireplace have survived.
