To make a day of it

Château de La Roche-Clermault stands in La Roche-Clermault (Indre-et-Loire), in the Centre-Val de Loire region of France. No visits are on record for this building.

The château de La Roche-Clermault stands a few kilometres south of Chinon, in the Indre-et-Loire department. The present building, dated by two carved inscriptions to 1638, replaced a medieval stronghold made famous by Rabelais, who set the Picrocholine war from Gargantua there. Beneath the building lies a network of underground refuges, explored by specialists from the 1960s onward, including a decorated chamber whose carvings, among them a kneeling figure, remain only partly understood.
