In La Fère, in the Aisne department, one wing remains of a château built at the turn of the 15th and 16th centuries for Marie de Luxembourg, countess of Vendôme. Its brick-and-stone construction stands as a notable example of Renaissance architecture in Picardy. Several children of the Bourbon-Vendôme family were born here, including Antoine de Bourbon, later king of Navarre and father of Henry IV. François I himself stayed for several weeks in 1529, during the negotiations of the Peace of the Ladies.
