To make a day of it

Château de Guillaumes stands in Guillaumes (Alpes-Maritimes), in the Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur region of France. No visits are on record for this building.

Perched on a rocky outcrop 875 metres above Guillaumes, this fortress, known as the castle of Queen Jeanne, preserves the remains of a stronghold built in the 1230s on the orders of the Count of Provence Raimond-Bérenger V. Its square keep and round tower reflect successive phases of fortification, later reinforced by Vauban before the site was dismantled in 1760 when the territory passed to Savoy. Left in ruins for generations, the building underwent restoration work between 2019 and 2025. An augmented reality application now lets visitors picture the vanished structures, including the works blown up with explosives in the eighteenth century.

What to know

  • Access to the castle involves a winding road followed by a climbing path to the top of the rocky outcrop, which requires some physical effort.
  • The site has been a protected natural and historic landmark since 1931, covering the ruins and the adjoining wooded plot.
  • An augmented reality application, downloadable or available on tablets from the tourist office, reconstructs the castle before its partial destruction in the eighteenth century.
  • Restoration work carried out until 2025 focused in particular on the round tower and its roof.
  • The visit takes place outdoors, among consolidated ruins, rather than inside a furnished or inhabited castle.
