To make a day of it

Burgstall Gleiritsch stands in Gleiritsch (Landkreis Schwandorf), in Bavaria, Germany. The building is a listed Baudenkmal. Its opening hours and prices have not been verified at the source yet.

The Burgstall Gleiritsch marks the site of a vanished medieval stronghold, located in a wooded area roughly 600 meters above sea level near Gleiritsch in the Upper Palatinate. First documented in 1397 in a sale deed, the fortress passed through the hands of several noble families, including the Plassenberg, from whom it took its name. Today only scant foundation remains can be found, as the ruins were long quarried for building stone after the castle's decline. Visitors should expect a historical site in a forest setting rather than visible ruins.

What to know

  • Only minor foundation remains survive, with no standing ruins to see.
  • The site lies in a forested area about two kilometers east of Gleiritsch, on slightly elevated ground.
  • Access is via a forest track from the road connecting Gleiritsch and Schömersdorf.
  • There are no opening hours, fees, or visitor facilities, as this is an open natural site.
  • Sturdy footwear suited to forest walking is advisable rather than expecting a typical castle visit.
