The Alte Limburg is the ruined remnant of a hilltop fortification on a spur of the Kaiserstuhl range, forty meters above the Rhine. The plateau had already been settled during the Neolithic period and later hosted a Celtic town and an early Roman fort, before a Frankish structure was raised there around the sixth or seventh century. Visitors can still make out half the foundation of a round tower dating from the tenth century, along with the remains of three earthen ramparts that once shielded the main enclosure.
