What the French Ministry of Culture records

Le plan actuel du château remonte au 13e siècle (premières mentions d'une forteresse à trois angles et quatre tours). Les Mostuéjouls, vassaux du roi d'Aragon puis du comte de Toulouse, se soumettent à l'évêque de Mende en 1268, ce dernier étant intéressé par la position qu'occupe le château, face à ceux de Capluc, Peyreleau et Peyrelade. L'édifice comporte trois parties reliées les unes aux autres. L'aile principale est cantonnée par deux épaisses tours carrées. A l'opposé se trouve la partie la plus ancienne du château, avec le vieux donjon. Enfin, à l'ouest, entre les deux, se trouve l'aile reliant les deux parties précédentes et faisant face à l'esplanade d'arrivée. Le donjon conserve des peintures murales médiévales.
