To make a day of it

Château de la Calade stands in Aix-en-Provence (Bouches-du-Rhône), in the Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur region of France. The building is registered as a historic monument (dating recorded in the Mérimée database: second quarter of the 17th century). Its opening hours and prices have not been verified at the source yet.

At Puyricard, a hamlet within the commune of Aix-en-Provence, the château de la Calade has stood beside the Touloubre river since the 1630s. Inside, visitors are drawn to a staircase adorned with refined plasterwork and to a set of early 19th century wallpapers, including a panoramic scene regarded as the earliest of its kind produced in France. Built for a councillor at the Provence court of accounts, the building retains two of its original four towers, the others having been demolished during the Revolution. The château remains privately owned.
