To make a day of it

Château de Baricci stands in Foce (Corse-du-Sud), in the Corse region of France. The building is listed as a historic monument (dating recorded in the Mérimée database: fourth quarter of the 14th century). Its opening hours and prices have not been verified at the source yet.

Perched above the Ortolo valley near Sartène, the ruins of Baricci castle stand on a site where no fortress had ever been built before its construction in 1380. Raised by Arrigo di la Rocca, it became in the following century the residence of the Cinarchesi lords and a stronghold of power in southern Corsica, before being captured and destroyed by Genoese forces in the early 16th century. Visitors today find the remains of a dwelling, defensive walls and a chapel, overlooking a wine and olive estate.

What to know

  • The site consists of open-air ruins: dwelling, fortifications, access ways, chapel and oven, within a protected perimeter.
  • The castle stands on a private wine estate in the upper Ortolo valley.
  • The monument has been listed as a historic monument since 2021.
  • No verified information is available on opening hours, admission fees or visiting conditions.
  • The site has remained in ruins since its destruction in the early 16th century, with no later rebuilding.
