To make a day of it

Château d'Espira-de-Conflent stands in Espira-de-Conflent (Pyrénées-Orientales), in the Occitanie region of France. Its opening hours and prices have not been verified at the source yet.

Perched on a ridge above the Llentilla valley, the ruins of Espira-de-Conflent castle recall an 11th-century stronghold built by the barons of Joch. Three sections of wall remain, made of river pebbles, more the remnants of a fortified house than a grand castle. The site has no visitor facilities, but the walk up and the view over the Bas-Conflent make it a worthwhile outing.

What to know

  • The site has no facilities or supervision, and there are no opening hours or tickets.
  • Access is on foot from an informal parking area near the bridge over the Llentilla, via a farm track then a ridge path.
  • The ground is rough, with loose stones and brambles, so sturdy footwear is advisable.
  • In summer the area is dry and at risk of fire, so caution is needed.
  • The ruins, three remaining wall sections, can be visited freely and at no cost.
