Hours and prices: see the official website

The hill overlooking the bay of Nice once carried a military stronghold, standing from the 11th to the 18th century. It withstood several sieges, notably in 1543 and 1691, before falling to French troops in 1705 and being torn down on Louis XIV's orders the following year. Visitors come mainly for the view over the city and the sea rather than for surviving structures.

What to know

  • This is no longer a château to tour but an open-air hilltop park.
  • The visit is essentially a walk offering views over the bay of Nice.
  • There is no admission fee or opening hours tied to a building, as the hill is a public open space.
  • Climbing up on foot from the old town requires moderate physical effort.
