Perched on a steep rocky outcrop above the circular village of Gruissan, the Barberousse tower is what remains of a fortified castle built in the second quarter of the 13th century by the Archbishop of Narbonne. The cylindrical keep, still standing with its two vaulted levels, rises above the rooftops, the lagoon and the surrounding salt marshes. Visitors come mainly for the view over the Aude coastline and the round layout of the village below.
