Aigues-Mortes is a walled town in the Gard department, entirely enclosed by its 13th-century ramparts, a rare surviving example in Western Europe of a fortification raised on marshland. Visitors can walk the full circuit, either along the wall-walk or at ground level, passing towers and gates spaced along nearly 1,600 metres of curtain wall. The Constance Tower, which once guarded the approach to the new town founded by Louis IX, belongs to the same fortified complex.
