In Merdrignac, in the Côtes-d'Armor, the manoir de La Peignie stands on the remains of a fortified castle built in 1204 and destroyed around 1450 by the English during the Hundred Years' War. The building seen today dates from 1632, rebuilt in local granite on ruins that had lain abandoned for nearly two centuries. One room from the original castle survived the destruction: a medieval hall with a carved dragon-headed beam and a massive fireplace dating from the 14th-15th centuries. The courtyard also holds a circular well, the last trace of the former stronghold that was once surrounded by a moat.
