Built in the 19th century as part of the Séré de Rivières defensive system, it was designed to block a southern route around the Pontarlier gap. Visitors can walk through a large polygonal structure surrounded by deep ditches, vaulted casemates and a rampart path leading to former artillery platforms. The site reflects late 19th-century military architecture and remained in use through the Second World War.
