# Fort de Valros

Perched on a promontory above the Thongue valley near Valros, in the Hérault, stand the ruins of a small medieval stronghold built around 1200. The square structure, some twenty-four metres on each side with thick walls, had a short military life before being dismantled during the Albigensian Crusade. The site also preserves a Chappe semaphore tower, added in the south west corner during the nineteenth century, which relayed messages between Avignon and Narbonne. Visitors can still make out the dry moat, the central cistern and the sockets that once held a wooden hoarding above the sole gateway.
