The three-wing complex was erected between 1720 and 1780 under the direction of architect Balthasar Neumann, commissioned first by Johann Philipp Franz and later by Friedrich Karl von Schönborn. Highlights include the grand staircase, the Kaisersaal and the Hofkirche, along with frescoes by Giovanni Battista Tiepolo. Together with its garden and adjoining square, the palace has been listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1981.
